SNOMED CT’s Ontological Commitment

چکیده

SNOMED CT is a clinical terminology that describes the meaning of terms by logical axioms. This requires an ontological commitment, i.e. precise agreements about the ontological nature of the entities referred to. We provide evidence that SNOMED implicitly supports at least three different kinds of commitments, viz. (i) independently existing entities, (ii) representational artifacts, and (iii) clinical situations. Our analysis shows how the truthvalue of a sentence changes according to one of these perspectives. We argue that a clear understanding of to what kind of entities SNOMED CT concepts extend is crucial for the proper use and maintenance of SNOMED CT.

Post-Coordination in the Mapping of Interface Terms of a Clinical Wound Documentation System to SNOMED CT

The objective of this work is to provide a formalization of the semantics of SNOMED CT’s refinement rules in Description Logics and to exemplify their usage on a real world wound documentation system. The goal of unambiguous documentation and communication of medical information with explicit semantics can be reached by combining standards and terminologies. Information Models (e.g. the HL7 Cli...

Representation of Part-Whole Relationships in SNOMED CT

In this paper we investigate representation of the part-whole relationship in SNOMED CT. We discuss the current approach, based on “SEP” triples, and several translations of it, which involve DLs at different levels of expressivity. We intend that our analysis will concretely inform the SNOMED community about the important tradeoffs of expressivity for their ontology, and help with future decis...

Translating SNOMED CT Terminology into a Minor Language

This paper presents the first attempt to semi-automatically translate SNOMED CT (Systematized Nomenclature of Medicine – Clinical Terms) terminology content to Basque, a less resourced language. Thus, it would be possible to build a new clinical healthcare terminology for Basque. We have designed the translation algorithm and the first two phases of the algorithm that feed the SNOMED CT’s Termi...

Leveraging Lexical Matching and Ontological Alignment to Map SNOMED CT Surgical Procedures to ICD-10-PCS

In 2015 ICD-10-PCS replaced ICD-9-CM for coding medical procedures in the U.S. We explored two methods to automatically map SNOMED CT surgical procedures to ICD-10-PCS. First, we used MetaMap to lexically map ICD-10-PCS index terms to SNOMED CT. Second, we made use of the axial structure of ICD-10-PCS and aligned them to defining attributes in SNOMED CT. Lexical mapping produced 45% of correct ...
